Bjoern Schwer, M.D., Ph.D., an Instructor in Pediatrics in the laboratory of Frederick W. Alt, Ph.D., has been named a recipient of an NIH K01 Career Development Award providing five years of research support.  The title of Dr. Schwer's project is "Elucidation of the role of Sirt6 in neural function, aging, and neurodegeneration."

The overall goal of the NIH Research Career Development program is to help ensure that a diverse pool of highly trained scientists are available in appropriate scientific disciplines to address the Nation's biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research needs.  Awardees are expected to launch independent research careers and become competitive for new research project grant (e.g., NIH R01) funding.
